St. Simons Island, GA

St, Simons was a last-second addition to this Georgia adventure. We didn’t know what to expect, and sometimes that is the best part of taking a risk and going on an adventure. From great sunsets to the most amazing food, this place never ceased to amaze us. We reserved an Aribnb, and drove the 90 minutes from Savannah down to unwind with local flare. From checking out the local coffee shop for breakfast or walking 5 minutes to the beach in the evening to watch the sunset (and a pelican that was punctual on the pier at each sunset) we had an amazing time. The local brewery on the island is a great gem, serving some amazing home-cooked food, and accompanying drinks. Georgia Sea Grill has an extensive bar and was a complete surprise to us. On the last evening, we decided to do a quick drive to Jekyll island (about 25 minutes and $8 later) to St. Andrews Beach for a sunset that just kept going. The views were exquisite and at times it felt like we were on a savannah with the view that we had to look to the west. 20 minutes after the sunset we found ourselves at dinner at The Wharf, still enjoying what the sunset was providing to us that evening.

The last day didn't disappoint with the surprises. We found ourselves waking up early to catch a sunrise on the beach. At first, we just were going to try The Pier, but ended up driving to the north end of the roadway to Gould’s Inlet Public Beach just in time for the sunrise. After some photos, we decided to go for a drive to a local coffee shop & then headed back to the beach for a wonderful walk up most of the available coastline.  We tried to dodge the jellyfish minefield & tide pools that we found ourselves in.  In the end, it was great to be in the warm sunshine and soaking it in before our flight back home to the cold & snow that awaited us.  We found ourselves with some extra time before our flight after checking out of our Airbnb and decided to drive around the remainder of the island that we hadn’t explored. We discovered the Fredrica National Monument. It is a well-maintained National Park monument that talks about Fort Frederica and the history of the area. Sea Salt Healthy Kitchen was our lunch spot which had all fresh ingredients and the people there were nothing short of a pleasure to talk to.

Kicking off the year with this amazing trip, sunshine, and happy winter vibes, we cannot wait to see where our explorations take us next.
